Sex in Space: Getting a Grip on Gravity

While sex in space is now a front and center topic of talk in public space travel circles, it may be far more complex and foreboding than once thought.

More research is needed in the role of gravity and its impact on the human body, said James Logan, a veteran NASA space physician speaking at a NewSpace conference gathering - but voicing his personal views.

“Sex in micro-g might be a little underwhelming. That is, the fantasy might be vastly superior to the reality. It’s a pretty messy environment…for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction,” Logan told an attentive audience over the weekend at the NewSpace 2006 meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, sponsored by the Space Frontier Foundation.

Sex in zero-g is going to have to be more or less choreographed, “otherwise it’s just going to be a wild fling,” Logan advised. But for those looking forward to space migration and setting up self-perpetuating civilizations off-Earth, the space physician raised several warning flags.

After the 26th gestational week of fetus development, lack of gravity delays skeletal development necessary for sitting, standing and walking, Logan said. Building adequate and proper neural connections after birth – requires movement under gravity, he added.

And after 3.8 billion years, everything on planet Earth has changed, Logan noted, except for one constant: gravity.

“In my opinion,” Logan continued, “the prospect of doing a single jump from 3.8 billion years of one-gravity into some kind of a weightless civilization is extremely naive.”

In the 45th year of human spaceflight “we still do not have an inkling of what the gravity prescription is,” Logan said. “Think of gravity as a medication. We don’t know the dose. We don’t the frequency. And we don’t know the side effects.”

For the long term, the tall pole in the tent is life sciences research, Logan observed, including more work on radiation protection, as well as space structures that produce artificial gravity. He advised that space “pioneering” should be replaced with “bioneering”.

The Future is here! Google vision gadget (PIC)

Designer Callum Peden has the idea of a device called “Google Vision”. Point the gadget towards any object in your surrounding, and based on image recognition and geolocation, Google will pull information about the object and display it on the transparent, retractable screen. This could be combined with the geographical coordinates initiative of Wikipedia... a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy made real.

FREE gadgets - Is it a Scam?

With so many links on the net for free stuff, i decided to take a look at a couple and see if they match the hype and deliver the goods...

Ever seen a site that promises free gear?

The two i choose work exactly the same way. The user signs up to the site and participates in one of the programmes.

For example an online video club which posts DVDs to your door for you to watch and return in the supplied envelope for a monthly fee.

The Video club then pays the 'Free gift' site per referrer. Your next task is to refer a number of friends so that your 'Free gift' can be despatched. When your friends sign up, they are added to your list as referees and can do the same themselves, participate in a programme and refer their friends and so on...

The catch? Well, sometimes the referral doesn't work. In our case, i had two friends that did sign up to (and complete) the programmes, but they were not credited to our account.

The site also recommends that you post your referral link on bulletin boards, Instant Messenger signatures and on as many websites as you can get. A great way to sign up your members in theory... Of course once you have earned your 'Free gift' your links will remain wherever you have posted them so in fact from that moment on they are getting free advertising.

Unfortunately there is only one free gift allowed per delivery address, so posting a huge banner ad on ScamGuard to try and get multiple gifts would be pointless.

Conclusion... Despite it's dodgy sounding promises, there really doesn't appear to be a loser. The programmes to participate in do seem a fair deal and i have heard of a few people that have had succes receiving their shiny new gadgets.

As of writing, i still haven't received mine, i will let you know when they turn up.

In zoos animal overeat ice-cream. Too hot for them(PICS!)

Very strange gadget: Talking Magic Mirror

The animatronics guru that produced the King Kong ride at Universal Studios Florida has channeled his creative powers to Themeaddicts, Inc., a startup company that makes it their business to turn wild fantasies into take-home products.

Developers description : Magic Message Mirror is a very unique product that adds fun, entertainment and functionality to your home automation / security system. As the name indicates this device not only looks and functions like a 16:9 (oriented in portrait mode), 30" diagonal decorative mirror it also has another concealed purpose. When your home automation / security system senses a change in your environment, the character within the mirror theatrically appears and notifies you of the change. Once notified you may choose to directly view a camera feed on the stealthy monitor. Note that you can update the mirror's frame so that it seamlessly matches your décor.

There's no pricing available, but one has to assume that a theme park-worthy magic mirror connected to a home security system isn't gonna be cheap.

Really i dont like this gadget :) I am afraid to assume, that this mirror in the morning after a good party can tell me :))

Friday pic , yeahh its friday

Google helps you download fullscreen movies

Have you ever seen or heard people talking about downloading movies off the Internet?
It may seem like a complicated thing to do, but because Google has millions of pages in their index it is now easy to find and download movies. By using some search operators you can refine your search to mainly show movies that can be downloaded.
inurl

The inurl operator you can include and exclude results from Google.

inurl:html

By searching with that query Google will return results that have html in the URL string.

-inurl:html

By placing a minus sign in front Google will remove results that have html in the URL string.

intitle

The intitle operator allows you to refine your results so that only results with that keyword in the title show up.

intitle:ice age

If you search for that on Google, documents with Ice age in the title should be the only ones that are displayed.

(avi)

Because movie files are mainly in avi or mpg format we can enter a search operator to try and limit the results to specific files.

(avi|mpg)

When using that string in the keyword box, only search results that are avi or mpg should show up. Ice age

By putting all the operators together we can now search for movies. I searched for Ice Age.

-inurl:htm -inurl:html -inurl:php intitle:ice age (mpg|avi)

just one click

Easily i found 5 fresh movies

Kickass SEO tool just realeased

SEOmoz has just recently released a new kick ass SEO tool:

Page Strength SEO Tool

How it works ?

The tool estimates using criteria from humans (del.icio.us tags, Alexa Rank, mentions at Wikipedia, etc.) and machine-assembled data (like pages indexed, internal link percent and even PageRank itself). It is by no means perfect or entirely accurate, but it is a significant upgrade from Google's often inaccurate and infrequently updated PageRank score (and it's fun to use).

I really like this tool and it is far better in measuring page strength than the crappy PR. Actually PageRank has just been updated and I checked my 12 sites … the values are more weird then ever. The start page of couple sites should not have 4 when it has it’s internal pages between 6 and 4 ….

One my site with PR 7 has strength 5.5
Any of you readers have more than 5.5?

1. Floating Bed $1.53 million Every so often, we like to take a look at things whose functionality isn't measured in gigabytes or megabangs, but instead just look amazing. This magnetic floating bed, I submit, may be among the coolest things we've ever covered. Designed by Dutchman Janjaap Ruijssenaars, it's got enough magnets to keep 900 kilograms (1,984 pounds) floating in the air. To make sure that the bed doesn't float away should it become windy (or "interesting," wink wink), it's tethered to the walls by four cables. Technically, the magnetic floating bed is for sale, but at a price of 1.2 million euros ($1.53 million), you're not likely to find it in your local mattress store
